Our breeding objective is to produce healthy Dobermanns with the correct character, temperament, and functional structure to perform well in Police or Sport work. Our dogs also make wonderful companions and family protectors.

We have produced 10 dogs titled in DPH (Danish Police Dog Program), 1 Police Service Dog, 1 Police Patrol & Narcotics Detection Dog, 1 Military Service Dog, 1 Search & Rescue Dog, 1 Avalanche Rescue Dog and 39 dogs titled in Schutzhund, IPO, Ringsport or SPH. Our goal is to consistently breed litters of quality working dogs. Not just one superstar with unusable littermates. Consistency is key.

We have over 40 years combined experience working and titling dogs in both police work and civilian sport. We have both competed successfully in national competition with dogs we raised and trained from puppyhood. Breeders must be involved firsthand in the training and trialing of their breeding stock.

Our foundation bitches, Qastra  v.d. Weyermühle, SchH3, FH, IPO3  &  Snoopy  v.d. Weyermühle, SchH3, IPO3, Politihund Kåring, come from a long line of German / World Schutzhund champions and police service dogs. Snoopy's sire was a trained anti-terriorist police dog in Nordrhein-Westfalen and her grandsire was the Finnish Search and Rescue champion in 1992. Qastra's grandsire was the first Dobermann to become both the DV Working Champion and DV Show Champion.

It is true that when you breed a dog, the pups do not "inherit" training or titles. The phenotype (the dog) and the genotype (the pedigree) are paramount. However, that said, an entire breeding program hinged on untitled dogs (particularly untitled breeding females) is bound for problems. It is too easy to wear rose-coloured glasses about one's own dogs. Testing done in the backyard does not cut it. That's where titles become important.

Titles indicate that on that given day, the dog did all the phases it was required to do in cooperation with his handler, under a working dog judge, in front of an audience of spectators. That means, the dog met the requirements for a working title, compared to all other working breeds, not just other Dobermanns.

When looking at breeding animals, it is also important to study littermates and note whether those dogs also display good working characteristics. As a first time puppy buyer, the v.d. Weyermühle Kennel impressed me due to multiple dogs from multiple litters being worked and titled. I felt more confident that a puppy from that kennel was likely to have strong working qualities.

Our brood bitches are conformationally rated sound, health screened, and titled in a working discipline. Ascomannis dogs are tested for: vWD (von Willebrand's Disease), Thyroid, Hips / Elbows, Eyes (PHTVL/PHPV), and Cardio. Our pups are examined by a veterinarian to ensure a 'clean bill of health'. They are wormed and receive their first vaccination before going to their new homes at 8 weeks of age.

Ascomannis pups come with full DKK registration papers (FCI recognized). Pups are sold with natural ears and tails in accordance with the laws of Denmark. About half of our U.S. buyers choose to crop and dock their new puppy, while the other half have chosen to leave their dog natural.

If you are interested in one of our pups, please include this information in your inquiry:

  1. Have you ever owned a Dobermann or another working breed?
  2. What is your experience in training / trialing with dogs? What club / trainer will you work with?
  3. What are you purchasing a pup for:  Police, Sport, Protection, Companion, Agility, Obedience?
  4. How many people live in your home? Any small children?  Have they been around large dogs before?

We do not breed or sell blue or fawn (isabella) Dobermanns.  Both colours were banned from breeding by the Dobermann Verein in 1994. Dogs of these colours are barred from international competition and do not receive registration papers from FCI member countries. Blues and fawns have a higher incidence of coat and skin problems leading to loss of coat (Colour Dilution Alopecia) and they often require specialized care.

We perform individual temperamant tests with the aid of a fellow dog trainer who is a stranger to the pups. These tests include, but are not limited to: reactions to noise, different footing / environments, responses in the dark, biting on various materials, desire to retrieve objects of many types, social responses to children and other animals, scenting behaviour, food drive, problem solving, resiliency and recovery to stress.

We know our dogs, their bloodlines and the consistent traits that they produce. We require information from our buyers regarding their personality, goals, and experiences in training. We try our best to match each individual pup to the best owner and vice versa, and we appreciate the buyer's input. We do not subscribe to the "pick of the litter" concept. What is a good trait for one person, may not be a good trait for another person, and may not suit their approach to training.

We are concerned that our pups go to the right home and have happy and long lives. If the occasion arises that a dog requires a new home, we will become involved. We are concerned about the welfare of the dogs we have bred for their entire lifetime. We like to be kept informed and welcome photos and contact from our buyers. If we can be of assistance with training questions or advice, we are happy to provide this.

Sincerely,

Lisa & Jes Poppelvig, Danish Police Dog Handler
