* hold cursor over photo to view caption * The Dobermann breed owes a huge debt of gratitude to Elly and Fritz Sauermann of the v. Ellendonk Kennel. This husband and wife team were training experts who had already achieved considerable success working with German Shepherds before turning their attention to the Dobermann. They produced countless outstanding working and show champion (Sieger) Dobermanns, the most famous being Bingo v. Ellendonk, SchH3, FH, angekört (ZVA) .
Bingo is widely credited with improving the character of the Dobermann in Europe. He won the 1977 D.V. Meisterschaft at 2 years of age and is the only Dobermann to have ever recorded a score of 100/100/100 in Schutzhund. He also passed the Körung for life with highest ratings for hardness & working drives. Succesful progeny of Bingo include: Cora v. Papenkamp who won the DV Meisterschaft in 1981, 1982 & 1984, Bonni v. Nettetal who won the 1986 & 1987 DV Meisterschaft, and Nicolai v. Kloster-kamp , 2nd at the 1987 DV Meisterschaft , etc. Even today, more than half of all DV Meisterschaft participants trace their heritage to this truly outstanding dog!

[.It is also very difficult to recognize the entire temperament of a potential breeding animal. So even as a breeder, one has to engage in training in order to recognize differences and differentiation of genetic predispositions. As a rule, one can only get a clear picture if the Dobermann has been in training for about two years. Appearance on the other hand is recognizable a lot earlier, and it is certainly easier to measure. The breeder often accomplishes that already when he exhibits his dog in the young dog class of a show by getting the judges evaluation. On the other hand, the ability to handle stress (which is a major factor in the inheritance of temperament) can only be evaluated after advanced training towards the clean performance of certain exercises, especially in protection work. Many dogs will then show very quickly that they are not as strong nerved as one initially thought. Since the ability to handle stress is closely related to hardness or the degree of robustness , it is of great importance for the breeder. A robust Dobermann is uncomplicated and not overly sensitive, so he is easy to keep for a breed fancier on one hand, on the other hand he is easy to train for dog sport participants. Only if a breeder succeeds over a long period of time in producing a Dobermann who satisfies in both categories (temperament and appearance), will he assure himself success and recognition. .]
